Our certification demonstrates our commitment to:

  • * Looking after our natural environment
  • * Minimal impacts on the environment
  • * Supporting and engaging our local community
  • * Reducing our carbon footprint
  • * Making real contributions to conservation
  • * Helping to preserve Australian Indigenous culture

The Ecotourism Australia Certification programs are globally recognised.

We are committed to ensuring sustainability is part of our daily operations, and we will continue to do our best to minimise our carbon footprint now and for years to come. Below are some of the initiatives we have implemented to date.

Energy & Water
Mercure Townsville has recently received a NABERS energy (National Australian Built Environment Rating System) rating of 4 stars, and a NABERS water rating of 3 stars. Energy efficient LED lighting is being installed in all rooms as part of our refurbishment program. Guests participate in our towel and linen reuse program to conserve water and energy.

Recycling
At Mercure Townsville, all hotel waste is separated into co-mingle, cardboard, food waste and general waste, minimising our impact on landfill.  In addition, we have taken several steps to further reduce water and embrace a circular system such as,
•    Sourcing local products
•    Working with Containers for Change as part of our recycling project
•    Ordering guest amenities in bulk to reduce wastage.
•    Removing single use water bottles for guest amenities.

Dry Amenities
We are delighted to share our ongoing commitment to reducing single-use plastics in our guest rooms. As part of this initiative, we have made a significant decision to eliminate single-use dry amenities such as toothbrushes, combs, and shower caps from our guest rooms. Instead, guests can request bamboo dry amenities by calling room service or visiting our friendly team at reception.

Large Amenities
As part of our ongoing efforts, we have made the proactive decision to move to large format amenities, replacing our single-use plastic common amenities with pump dispensers throughout the hotel. By eliminating single-use plastic bottles, we are significantly reducing the amount of waste generated by our operations. This commitment aligns with our dedication to environmental stewardship and reflects our ongoing efforts to improve sustainability in all aspects of our hotel.

Water Refill Stations
We no longer sell single-use PET water bottles within the hotel. Instead, we have installed a water refill station adjacent to Celsius Bar & Restaurant, offering chilled still water to our guests without the need for disposable plastic bottles. This initiative not only significantly reduces plastic waste but also encourages our guests to embrace sustainable choices during their stay.

Conservation
As part of our commitment to environmental conservation, we actively support local conservation efforts including Clean up Australia Day. We participate in initiatives that protect and preserve the natural beauty and biodiversity of our region, ensuring that future generations can continue to enjoy the wonders of our local environment.
